Look Boss! The Plane! The Plane!
Don’t worry if you see a WWII Bomber up in the air or if on Monday one should fly by your office window because now through June 5th the Collings Foundation’s B-17, B-24 and B-25 Bombers are at Moffett Field. For a close up view take the Main Gate near the Control Tower.
Moffett Field is located in the Sunnyvale-Mountain View area of the southern San Francisco bay, adjacent to Highway 101, aproximately 10 miles north of San Jose.
During the mid 1950’s my Dad’s construction company laid pipe, water and sewer, in the area of Moffett Field and Lockheed. One summer day my Dad invited my Mom, brother and me to come watch him work. We lived in Modesto at the time so going to work, in Mt View, meant we had to get up very early. The first time I saw Hangar One was just as the sun was rising over Mt.Hamilton. My brother and I had a great time that day both outside and inside the humongous “garage”. It looked amazing and all these years later I still find it fascinating.

Now that the Navy has determined because Hangar One has been found to have toxic PCB’s it and our memories should be cast aside. The cost for the clean-up would be in the millions of dollars but if saved we might then have the chance to find uses for the structure and repay the debt to the Navy.
Due to lack of space at the public meeting with the Navy on May 23rd, many that wished to voice their opinions were turned away at the door. Hopefully another meeting will be scheduled.
