To Carpool, to Ferry, To Pay F**ng 4$ a Gallon

I had to pay $3.7 million zillion dollars a gallon yesterday, and while my car gets great mileage and I usually don’t begrudge it, I was feeling the pain. I’ve been collecting stories of people’s commutes, and thinking of re-organizing my own. Mine would likely be: bike to Ferry Building, take bike on Ferry, then bike up downtown Oakland’s 3rd to San Pablo Ave to Emery-Bored. Co-workers are taking SF Muni to Bart, then the Emery-Go-Round (doesn’t that sound kind of silly and frivolous for a bus that you want to be dependable?) Fan that I am of public transit, I did see some cold and miserable people waiting for the hurlygurly bus last night on Hollis Street.

Friends who work in Marin meet at the Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza and then ride together up through Marin, and that’s against the commute. Heck, my coworkers are also commuting “against” the commute, though it’s still pretty crowded. I would give up a lot not to have to drive through the Financial District. Thing for me is I don’t work every day, and I have weird hours. So it’s like, miss the ferry, wait around in downtown Oakland for a few hours. How I long for my old job where, though I hated the people and the work, I had a lovely 2 mile walk to and fro.

In defense of the poorly named Emery-go-round, it is free and if you need to get around the 1.4 miles that is Emeryville, it’s awesome.

    Wait…it’s really called Emery-go-ground?

Is gas really up to four dollars out there? It’s still only 3 bucks in the midwest, but I hadn’t even thought about how much it must be for you guys by now!
