First Day Out

boat_bridge.jpg

Thanks to Chris (Skip) got to crew his boat out to the Golden Gate Bridge and Angel Island this Sunday. It was the first day of sailing, I take it, and the bay was very crowded. Sighted: Larry Ellison’s boat. Also a black catamarran, a Korean boat that was built expressly to cross the Pacific, and a weird triangle houseboat off the Sausalito marina. The bay was amazing: blue, great winds, nice sailor folk. A glass of wine, the quiet of sailing (and singing Christopher Cross), I mean, where else in the world would you want to be?

Oh man, this has been a long journey for me. First, been ogling boats for about 15 years of my life. Then, severe motion sickness prevented me from ever setting foot on one. On a ferry-pub-crawl (you take ferries around and drink at their destinations) I met a girl who, later, bought a boat. I made it very clear that I would do just about anything to help her out. I was totally unskilled. She took pity on me once, and I guess I didn’t annoy her too bad, b/c I got the invitation Sunday. I say: bring lots of food and booze, if you do get invited, do the icky tasks nobody wants to do (take up the buoys, roll up lines, etc.) and grovel. Good luck. If I hear of something I’ll tell you!
