SF360 one city, one film tonight!

large_cbSpeech.jpgTonight is the first SF360 San Francisco Movie Night: while it’s our first time with the “everyone in the city watches the movie at the same time” event, other cities around the US have already joined in the fun. Tonight, thousands of DVD copies of Street Fight (watch trailer) will start at 7:30 in public venues, apartments and house parties around the city, “to watch and discuss the same film, creating something of an ‘exploded’ theatre all around the city.” Street Fight follows the turbulent, racially charged battle for mayor of Newark, N.J., between Cory Booker, a 32-year old Rhodes Scholar/Yale Law grad and Sharpe James, the four-term incumbent twice his age. When I went to the SF Film Fest press opener, people seemd to think that that this multi-award winning film influenced the outcome of the mayoral vote. Now that’s a cool idea…if we could just translate that in national terms…

It’s too late to have your DVD hand-delivered to your door, but you can still see the film at Varnish Fine Art, the Film Arts Foundation or at any number of house parties that signed up to screen it. This is hopefully the first of many SF One City One Film nights, thanks to the San Francisco Film Society, Ironweed Film Club and SF360.org. But they don’t just want us to watch the same film at the same time — they want us to eat the same food (thanks to this custom menu provided by Delfina) and they also provide a house party guide.

That is just too fucking cool! I love it! Now all they need is a custom backchannel so people can talk about the film in real time like on IRC.

Yes!!! I thought so, too — it would be so much fun. I followed along with my friends’ academy award liveblogging this year and had a lot of fun; I thought it would be awesome if they did this, got a deal with Comcast for local access for a film and then lots of people liveblogged/made a drinking game out of it, SF-style!

We watched it last night at a friend’s pad (a friend managed to score the DVD), and it was most awesome. Very cool movie. I’ll probably write something about it some time.
