“It’s Our Fault, Too”
As we are all very aware of, next Tuesday will be the 100th Anniversary of the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire, and although there was a great deal of destruction in San Francisco and the immediately surrounding areas, the after-effects extended much farther.
An exhibit, “It’s Our Fault, Too: The 1906 Earthquake in San Jose and Santa Clara Valley” opens today at History San Jose. The exhibit will feature five topics: Geology and Seismology of the San José Region, A Portrait of San Jose, c. 1900, April 18, 1906, The Community Responds, and The Next “Big One.” Detailed information can be found at the History San Jose website, but essentially this is another venue to view photographs, artifacts, personal accounts, and generally dive into what went on in San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley surrounding April 18, 1906.
I must say, this is a topic that makes me a bit giddy. I’ve always had an interest in earthquakes and at one point in my undergraduate life I had to a make a choice - would I take the Geology route or Advertising? In the end, I chose Advertising, but that didn’t end my love for the amazing idea that the ground beneath us is moving and all the geologically-yummy things that go along with it.
The History San Jose exhibit runs from today through December 31, 2006 - so you have plenty of time to make it out here.
If you’re interested in more events, the 1906 Earthquake Centennial Alliance is chock full of goodies. There are expos, exhibits, live performances, tours, workshops, etc. My calendar is going to be quite full the next few months.
