Where is the Balance?
Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, is speaking to the students at San Francisco’s Lowell High School this morning. Principal Paul Cheng did not find it necessary to provide his students with the opportunity to hear from a speaker with opposing views. What a proud day for education, let the kids hear from only one side that will teach ‘em!

We hear from “the opposing viewpoint” on the news every single day.
Yes, we do but this is High School. Some students are so busy with their activities and they do not get the news on their iPods.
Definitely a shame they couldn’t have someone else to balance out the point of views expressed by Mrs. Sheehan. These are the formative years for these kids, especially with regards to political orientation. And before anyone flames me, I support some of what Sheehan has to say.
Do you honestly think that if Dick Cheney came to the high school to speak that they’d invite Nancy Pelosi to give a rebuttal?
Not many people are clinging to the untenable position of supporting the Iraq war anyway. “The” “opposing” viewpoint exists in degrees only.
Why expect every opinion stated in public to be counter-balanced by the party line? If the truth is on your side, then you have nothing to fear from Cindy Sheehan.
I heard a Gold Star Family member is now slated to speak at the school to present his views.
If a speaker with opposing views was invited, then it would be a debate, not a ‘talk’.
Jordan, if your comment was a rebuttal to my comment, I say the same thing to you “If the truth is on your side, then you have nothing to fear”.
And Peter, talk, debate, symposium, what does it matter? After all, no matter how much you may like it or not, there are two sides to every coin. This isn’t science, it’s politics. Imho the most important talk those kids had that day (hopefully) was the one around the dinner table with their parents.
This amounts to idealogical child abuse, these kids are much to young to be exposed to these sort of ideas. People just don’t have the mental faculties to think logically for themselves until the age of… umm…, er…, ah…
