Today is the 43rd anniversary of the closing of Alcatraz so here’s to you ya, ya big tourist trap. I did my time on the rock one day taking some friends out on one of the obligatory tours and I was not a fan in the least. Bad mojo I tell ya. Great view of the city though! I definitely don’t plan on going out there again anytime soon.

I’ve lived in SF for five years, and not even before becoming a San Franciscan have I ventured to Alcatraz. It’s not the ghosts that scare me, it’s the tourists, harharhar. But seriously, I’d like to go just to take pictures. Last semester some brave chaps from our photo dep. stayed a night there. Tres cool!

I love Alcatraz- and the dusk tour is the best, and all the $$ goes to the ggnra. I don’t think it’s a tourist trap- just an interesting and weird thing. The crowd control is some of the best in the world, and they’ve won awards for it (I’ve heard from museum profesisonals).

    anyways, there you go.

i didn’t visit until i had already moved to the city and passed through my tourist phase. but a friend came to town and we braved those evil pesky (foundation and lifeblood of our local economy, the NERVE of them) tourists.

we absolutely loved it. excellent audio tour that apparently has won like museum awards or something. but the beauty of the headsets is that you can melt into the experience of being there and tune out the others around you.

i recommend the trip but save yourself the trouble if you aren’t going to do the audio tour. it makes it.
