Hit & Run driver still not identified

On March 2nd in between 6:45am-7am Ashlyn Dyer was struck by a vehicle at Washington Blvd. and Kobbe Street in the Presidio. The driver has yet to be caught. If you recall seeing Ashlyn Dyer in this area during this time OR recall seeing any suspicious vehicles with damage in the area please contact the U.S. Park Police Detective Sgt. Jansing at 415-561-5144.
This story has been picked up by a few other outlets which focused on the fact that she was identified by using the registration on her iPod. I don’t see why that’s really such a big deal. These people are detectives. They do this for a living and I think back-tracing someone from a piece of consumer electronics is pretty much a lobbed softball to these guys. Let’s focus on the story that no one has found the scumbag that hit her please.

…yea… Odd “hook” to the story … but all in all .. I’m glad there’s a hook .. for the all too complacent media.
For me, the hook was that the impact was so strong she was thrown over a fence and was found laying in a ditch by a park worker unconcious. According to the email I received from a good friend with the plea for help, she remains in a coma, in critical but stable condition with numerous internal injuries.
Accidents happen, but once you leave the scene, you’re in so much more trouble. Who could do such a thing?
As a someone who used to marathon train in the same area, this strikes close to home and it scares me greatly. I hope someone saw what happened and comes forward. And I hope Ashlyn makes a full recovery.
Also – iPod trivia aside – this reinforces my running coaches’ edict never to run or engage in any solo sports without ID. This is especially true if you have any medical needs that wouldn’t be immediately apparent. I frequently leave my ID at home, but I’m going to be better about that, starting now.
Get well soon, Ashlyn.
You can check Ashlyn’s status at:

It has been determined that she had gone without oxygen for over ten minutes, so irreverable brain damage has occured. She wll be taken off life support once all brain activity ceases.
PLEASE stop and think about where you were that morning- did YOU see who hit her? Could you have seen who did this????
this is a horrible tragedy. For anyone who didn’t know ashlyn, she was one of the few really happy people in the world. Always in a good mood and always friendly. The type of person who would do anything for you…even if she only knew you casually. Please please please spread the word about this. Someone knows something and the worst part about this is some monster didn’t show any human compassion and possibly could have saved her.
Ashlyn Dyer Status Update: Sunday March 12, 2006 11:00 PM San Francisco
After 27 years of happiness, love, laughter and true spirit, Ashlyn passed peacefully at 4:23 PM. Doctors were able to harvest all healthy organs which will provide the gift of life to many.
that ashlyn dyer died is so sad ! I did not know her, I’m even not from the u.s. – I’m from Europe, actually Austria (where Schwarzenegger was born) – but I’ve been to California before, and since that time san francisco is my favorite city. that’s why I watch the news on the web, on tv or mags and newspapers from time to time. and some days ago I was reading about ashlyn dyer. this tragedy touched my heart – maybe because in the past I’ve been to some funerals of the family of my best friend michael. first his little brother died in an avalanche while snowboarding, than his mother died from cancer, and just few weeks ago his dad died from an accident at work. so he lost within a short period of time almost all his family, only his little sister heidi is alive – and she looks almost like a twin of ashlyn. that’s why I stopped at the article and I can understand the feelings of the family and friends of ashlyn. I hope the police in san francisco can find the person who ended this young life, it will not bring back a daughter to the parents, but it’s just not right when a driver gets away with that. and if this person had stopped the car and called 911 maybe (like an article said) she could be still alive. I wish all the best to the family and friends of ashlyn. even in Europe there are people who are with you. martin
