In-N-Out Secret Menu

doubledouble.jpg Okay so this isn’t Norcal specific, but since we seem to have quite a few In-N-Out fans over here in the Bay, I thought it would be a service to all In-N-Out fans to know of the much-coveted In-N-Out Secret Menu. And it’s not really a secret since a lot of people know about this anyway, but I figure the Metblogs would be a nice place to reveal these things.

So most fans of the In-N-Out chain already know of the basic menu: the Double Double, the Cheeseburger, the Hamburger, and of course the fries, shakes, and soft drinks. But REAL fans of In-N-Out also know of the Secret Menu, aka food that is not on the menu, but that all In-N-Out chains will also serve, if you know what to order. Shamelessly stolen from this In-N-Out Secret Menu site, here is the In-N-Out Secret Menu in all its glory:

  • “Animal-Style” – The bun is grilled with the mustard (I’ve also heard that the mustard is fried right into the patty). Instead of raw onions, you’ll get sauteed onions. You’ll also get extra “special sauce” and pickles with your burger. And of course it also comes with lettuce and tomato.
  • “Wish Burger” – No meat. Basically a veggie burger.
  • “Grilled Cheese” – As above, but with two slices of cheese.
  • “Protein Style” – For the Atkins fans, the burger will be wrapped in lettuce leaf instead of buns.
  • “Flying Dutchman” – Two meat patties and two slices of cheese. Only. For the veggie hater.
  • “Double Meat” – Double Double without the cheese.
  • “3×3″ – Three patties, three slices of cheese. 4×4 would mean four patties and four slices of cheese, followed by 5×5, etc. There’s also the 2×4 option if you want two patties and four slices of cheese, etc.
  • “Fries – well done” – Extra crispy brown fries.
  • “Neapolitan Shake” – Blend of choc, vanilla, strawberry shakes
  • “Choco-Vanilla Swirl Shake” – Apparently they’ll also make a chocolate-vanilla swirl shake.

And there you have it. Gah, now I’m hungry. Oh, and FYI, the lone In-N-Out in San Francisco is on 333 Jefferson Street, though they have outlets in lots of other Bay Area locations.

The In-N-Out just off Millbrae Ave.(11 Rollins Rd) is the one I visit just before I drive into SFO. My taxi smells like Cheese Burger and Fries…but too bad!

It’s been my experience that, for the large part, In’n'Out in NorCal doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Perhaps because it hasn’t been as much a part of your landscape as for us SoCal kids.

    I don’t know if y’all are worthy yet . . .

    ;)

p.s. you can also order Fries animal style.

and if you say cheeseburger plain and dry, that’s what you’ll get -because the employees there are specially trained to actually hear things customers say.

    brilliant.

To me, “secret menu” would mean you say some magic word and, all of a sudden, you can order tuna melts, chili fries, steak sandwiches, and other things that are not on the menu.

Even McDonald’s will serve you your burgers the way you want them these days. Coining code terms for the variations doesn’t make these accomodations suddenly special.

MickeyD is late-comer to the “as you want it” fad. The secret at In-n-Out is just that you can be more creative than their very limited menu would otherwise imply. McDs has always allowed you to ask for no pickles, etc, but In-n-Out tells their employees to listen and make sure they get it right the first – not the fifth – time.

There’s nothing suddent about the In-N-Out secret menu – it’s been around for years and years and years – but NorCals are just new to the fun.

While it seems that a lot of SoCal people are posting comments… let me join in =)

I am a SoCal native transplanted to NorCal.

During the opening of the various In-N-Out locations in NorCal, I went in and ordered from “the special menu” (and there are things missing from the list) and they got it right away.. as they are training on it.

I did see a guy actually eat a 10×10… man was he not doing well when he left (and he was a small guy too)

I’m not dissing the diligence of In’n'Out employees or the history of the business. All I’m saying is that making up names as shorthand for common variations on menu offerings ain’t what I’d consider to be a “secret menu”.

If I can walk into an In’n'Out, say some secret password that suddenly allowed me to order shit like deep-fried zucchini and get chili on my burger…well, that would be a secret menu worth taking note of.

But the things listed above are just variations. If anything, the list of terms above is just a glossary of “variation shorthand”, not a proper “secret menu”.

And, yeah, I’m just arguing semantics, I suppose. And, yeah, it’s kind of lame and curmudgeonly to argue about semantics. But it’s Monday.

Chester, you’re totally right. I guess I would be more impressed if I could suddenly get something new by using cool lingo. In reality if I went up to the window at In-N-Out and asked for a hamburger without a meat pattie I’d get the same thing as if I’d requested a “wish list”. Darn it, now I can’t see the “secret menu” in the same light as I used to.
Oh and before SoCal kids start telling me I’m unappreciative of the chain, I myself am a SoCal kid and insist on eating In-N-Out regularly…even the Thanksgiving weekend, haha.
