We Need Blood!

givelife.jpgNo, no, not because of the Zombie invasion a few days back… local blood banks are really in a shortage of donations!

This is the first time in over thirty years that local hospitals have had a day’s or less supply of blood in their banks. Local blood banks have issued an emergency appeal for donations.

If you are eligible to give blood, please consider going to your local blood bank to donate. Type O blood is specifically in demand.

Blood Centers of the Pacific is conducting a “Pint for a Pint” program, in which you will receive a pint of ice cream for a pint of donated blood. Everybody wins!

From the Blood Centers’ donation page:

10 REASONS TO DONATE BLOOD

  • Blood transfusions save lives.
  • There’s no substitute for human blood.
  • Every three seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion.
  • About 60 percent of the population are eligible to donate blood, yet less than five percent do.
  • A pint of blood, separated in to components, can help up to three people.
  • You’ll make your community a safer place.
  • Fulfills your desire to “give back” to the community.
  • You’ll receive a mini physical (blood pressure, temperature, iron level).
  • You’ll learn your blood type.
  • It’s safe, simple and it saves lives.

And yet marking “gay” on their questionaire immediately disqualifies you…

according to the red cross, the reason they exclude the gays is because of a study that showed that 43% of HIV+ donated blood came from Men Who Had Sex With Men. or to put it more simply, 43% of HIV+ donors are gay men. (or at least they were 10 years ago when the study was done.) if anything, that seems to indicate that gay men were LESS likely to carry HIV, since 57% of the HIV+ blood came from non-MwhSwM.

maybe a more effective question to ask, rather than “have you had gay sex,” would be, “are you a skank ho?”

Your math’s a bit off, Mattymatt, unless some other group (men who had sex with women, women who had sex with women, women who had sex with men, golf carts who had sex with derigibles, I dunno) accounted for more than 43%. But it’s a dumb and outdated number anyway, so the sentiment stands.

    Take my blood! Please!

Except it’s incredibly more restrictive than “gay”. It’s:

a male who has had sexual contact with another male, even once, since 1977

…even ONCE. So bisexual men are out. Didn’t Kinsey find that most heterosexual men have had at least one homosexual experience during their lifetime? So I guess men can’t donate blood. And, well, it’s even more restrictive; if you:

have had sexual contact in the past 12 months with anyone described above

…then you can’t donate, either, thus leaving out the women who love those slutty men who got a little too drunk that one time in college 25 years ago. So it would seem only women avoiding male sexual contact for the past 12 months are eligible for donating blood.

    No wonder there’s a shortage.
