New Year TV watchin’

New Year's on TV

We spent New Year’s Eve at home this year, but we did manage to catch the Embarcadero stuff on KRON4. Looked festive, if very crowded and rainy. It was surprising that we could even see the fireworks considering the usual fog this time of year — I guess the rainy weather helped clear things up a bit, as ironic as that may sound. It was a hoot to see these fancy-dressed revelers at the Hyatt singing along to the Pointer Sisters and Rose Royce (And did she have a shiny tight jumpsuit or what? Some major camel toe there, people). Watching people try to dance about while juggling an umbrella was also amusing.

Mostly though, I think the celebrations tonight were dampened by the news of the tsunami disaster. After we kissed each other when the clock struck midnight, we held hands and had a moment of silence for the victims. It was just something we needed to do. And judging by what else we saw on TV, it looks like other people around the Bay Area were showing their solidarity for their South Asian brethren by lighting some candles and having that moment of silence. We can only hope 2005 will be much much better.

So Happy New Year everyone. Here’s hoping for the best this coming year.
